Your Genes Are Not Your Excuse: What a New Weight-Loss Study Actually Found

A new randomized trial found people with high genetic obesity risk lost just as much weight through diet as people with low risk. Here is what that means for you.

Here is the direct answer: a 2026 randomized controlled trial found that people with a high genetic predisposition to obesity lost just as much weight through a structured diet as people with a low genetic predisposition. Genetics did not predict who succeeded. The plan did.

What the new study found

The trial, known as GENEROOS, enrolled 223 adults, mean age 51 and about three-quarters women, chosen from the extremes of a polygenic score for higher BMI: half in the top few percent of genetic risk for obesity, half in the bottom. Everyone was randomized to the same six-month program, either dietary coaching or a control group. Genetic risk did not change who responded. Dietary coaching lowered BMI by about 1.5 points whether a person’s genes stacked the deck toward obesity or not, and there was no significant interaction between genetic risk and the diet’s effect (Rodosthenous et al., Nature Communications, 2026).

One honest caveat the researchers flag themselves: that 1.5 point drop was real, but it closed only about half of the 3.0 point BMI gap the high-risk group started with. Diet narrowed the genetic gap. It did not erase it. Genes still shaped where people began. They did not decide how much the plan could move them.

That is a direct answer to a question a lot of people ask before they even try: “what’s the point, my whole family struggles with weight.” The honest answer, from this data, is that your genetics may make hunger louder. They do not appear to cap how much a structured plan can do for you.

Why “my genes make it impossible” is the wrong frame

This finding lines up with a pattern that shows up across the evidence on what actually predicts weight-loss success, and it is rarely biology. In a landmark study of more than 1,600 adults, people who kept a daily food log lost roughly twice as much weight as people who kept none, regardless of their starting point (Kaiser Permanente study). A separate meta-analysis of 11 randomized trials found that people who stayed in some form of ongoing coaching contact after initial weight loss kept off significantly more weight than people left on their own (Middleton et al., Obesity Reviews). None of these studies sort participants by genetic risk first. They sort by whether structure was in place.

Put together, the throughline is methodology, not biology. Logging, planning, and consistent contact are the levers that move the needle, and the GENEROOS data suggests those levers work about as well for people whose genes stack the deck against them as for people whose genes don’t.

What this looks like day to day

None of this means genetics are irrelevant to how you feel while losing weight. If hunger hits you harder, plan for it instead of white-knuckling it: protein and vegetables first at every meal, water before you decide a craving is real hunger, and a fallback go-to meal for the days willpower runs low. The plan is the same whether your biology is working with you or against you. What changes is how much grace you give yourself on a hard day, not the structure of the plan itself. A slip is still just data, not a verdict on whether this can work for you.

The same self-monitoring habit behind the evidence above, simply writing down what you eat, is one of the most consistent predictors of success in the research, genetic risk score or not.
